Addiction to at least one substance impacts a massive subset of the population. In the US, 34 million adults currently smoke cigarettes and more than 16 million Americans live with a smoking related disease, and smoking is the leading cause of preventable death, accounting for about 1300 deaths every single day. 19.7 million Americans also battle with substance use disorder, 74% of which suffer from alcohol abuse. Excessive alcohol use is responsible for more than 95,000 deaths in the United States each year, or 261 deaths per day and in 2019, 70,630 drug overdose deaths occurred in the United States.
These conditions can be some of the most difficult to successfully treat and require a multi-faceted approach with counseling, peer support and often medical management. We aim to help those that struggle with addiction disorders in a comforting, non-judgmental environment. Medical treatment options to aid with smoking cessation, alcohol and substance use disorders include bupropion, varenicline, nicotine replacement, acamprosate, naltrexone, buprenorphine. Additionally, N-acetylcysteine has been shown to offer moderate effect in reducing relapse rates for addictions related to smoking, alcohol, stimulants, and marijuana and may be a useful adjunctive treatment in those who have already achieved abstinence.
